Practices include dancing, sports competitions, wearing masks, etc.

The authors of Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland understood that the world they created had a Hark side, so we have the characters Captain Hook and the Queen of Hearts. These arc the traditional villains (反派角色) of children’s books. They may frighten young readers, but their funny behaviors make them have no real authority.

Many authors of more recent books for children and teenagers have similarly shown an interest in the dark side. But the dark side in children’s books today is more violent than it once was, and the shadows it left are rarely driven away by the comic characters and scenes. Instead of stories about children who will not grow up, we now have stories about children who struggle to survive. In 2009, Neil Gaiman won the Newbery Medal for The Graveyard Book, a work about death. Similarly, J.K. Rowling described her Harry Potter hooks as “largely about death.”

It’s hard to imagine how the authors of Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland came up with something like that. They had spent large amounts of time with children; so they knew what the latter wanted in their stories clearly. However, inspiration for many of today’s children’s stories does not seem lo come from children’s experience. For example, according to J.K. Rowling, dementors (摄魂怪) were inspired by her own experience with depression.

Nowadays, writers never produce their works on the basis of the imaginative worlds of children. In today’s stories, those safe magic worlds are rapidly disappearing as adult anxieties edge out childhood fantasy.

  28. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

  A. The author of Peter Pan had a dark side.

  B. Children may be scared of the villains.

  C. Villains’ frightening behaviors result in less authority.

  D. Authors of children’s book ignore the dark side.

  29. Which of the following best reflects the dark side in recent children’s books?

  A. Evil characters. B. Comic characters.

  C. Children’s worries. D. Adults’ depression.

  30. Wind, of the following can replace the underlined phrase “edge out”?

  A. make up for B. make room for

  C. take the place of D. take charge of

  31. What’s the purpose of this article?

  A. To introduce some children’s books to the readers.

  B. To list some lovely characters in children’s books.

  C. To point out a problem concerning recent children’s book writing.

  D. To analyze the differences between recent and traditional children’s books.

More than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed across the globe each day, and it is likely that many taste bitter.

Now, a new study suggests that coffee lovers ran make their drink taste sweeter by simply changing the color of their coffee mps. Scientists from Federation University Australia and the University of Oxford claim that blue and glass cups reduce coffee’s bitterness, without any need for sugar, and that coffee drank from while cups tastes the bitterest.

To prove their claims, the researchers invited 36 volunteers and used three different colored cups-blue, white and transparent-to do an experiment. In the experiment, coffee consumed from the white cup was found to taste less sweet when compared to the other two cups. And the cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.

The scientists believe that the color brown may be associated with coffee’s bitterness because coffee in a while cup appears the brownest and tastes the bitterest. “Our study clearly shows that the color of coffee cup does influence the flavor (风味) of coffee,” Dr. George of Federation University Australia, said. “But the potential effects may he different between a one-time purchase and a return customer.” “Anyhow, the effect of the cup’s color on the flavor of the coffee suggests that cafe owners, waiters, as well as coffee cup producers should carefully consider the color of their cups,” he added.

However, the idea that color can change the taste of food and drink is not new. A study published last year showed that red, strawberry-flavored cake served on a white plate was 10 percent sweeter and 15 percent more flavorful than the same food presented on a black plate.

  A. Because white cups are not as beautiful as other cups.
