  Dear Jack,

I desperately need some novels by contemporary authors for my English study. Finding them unavailable in China, I’m writing to ask you to buy some for me.

Considering my English level, preference is given to those easy to comprehend. I’m wondering if you

could have the books delivered to me once you get them. If so, you are requested to inform me how you prefer to receive the money.

Your earliest reply would be appreciated.

  Possible version:

Immediately, the class became excited.Nobody shared my silence except Rafael. Some could hardly

wait to tell their seatmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces aglow with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere bombarded them with inquiring questions. Obviously bewildered at the sudden commotion around, Rafael turned to me for reasons in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms. Sullivan, whose words I set down on

  paper for Rafael. [78 words]

Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Rafael shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was lost in a thunderous outburst of applause. I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover. [72 words]

  录音稿

  (Text 1)

W: There they are! At last. I’ve been looking for the keys everywhere.

M: What? You’re always losing them.

W: I know, and I really thought I’d lost them this time. Thank goodness.

  (Text 2)

M: You are an extremely gifted language learner! You can speak so many foreign languages.

W: Well, I studied French at primary school. Fifteen years ago, I learnt some Japanese in evening classes and now I study Spanish on the Internet.

  (Text 3)

W: Could you give me a ride to the airport tomorrow? My flight is at 11:00 o’clock so I should leave around 8:30.

M: Oh. I have an appointment at 9:00 so I’m afraid I won’t be able to help you.

  (Text 4)

W: Can I get bread in the supermarket around the corner?

M: Yes, but in fact, there is a better baker’s house. Just opposite the bank. It’s Sisi’s.

W: I’ll have to look. Thank you very much.

  (Text 5)

M: Tom faxed me that he telephoned the repairman two days ago.

W: But did he come? It’s still hot here.

M: I’ll e-mail him right now and find out.

  (Text 6)

M: Hello. Can we still get tickets for tonight’s show?

W: Yes, there are tickets still available.

  M: How much are they?

W: Full price is $35 and $25 for students.

M: And what time does it start?

W: Doors open at 6:30pm, but the show doesn’t begin until 7:15.

M: Can I get two student tickets for this evening?

  W: Certainly.

  M: Here’s the money.

  (Text 7)

W: So do you like it at the summer camp, Robert?

M: Yeah! You know I love it. I really enjoy going fishing in the lake.

W: Do you? What do your friends like doing? www.2abc8.com

M: Well, Lisa is crazy about water-skiing so she spends a lot of time doing that.

W: What about Richard? Does he like it too?

M: Oh, no. He thinks it’s boring. This summer Richard’s really into horse riding.

  W: What about Jake?

M: Jake is really fond of rock climbing so we all go climbing on Saturdays. That’s interesting.

W: I bet Judy comes with you too. She loves rock climbing, right?

M: Not any more. She doesn’t like doing anything tiring. She just stays in the camp with her friends all the time.

  (Text 8)

W: How is little Ryan doing at kindergarten, Gary?

M: He’s doing fairly well. It’s been a few weeks since he first started going, so Mary and I are pretty used to it now. You should have seen Mary cry when she was about to set off on the first day, though!

W: I think that is a normal reaction for mothers to have. How does he get to the kindergarten?

M: Mary walks with him every day, unless the weather is bad. If it’s raining, they’ll drive or take a bus. But most days it’s sunny.

W: And is Ryan enjoying kindergarten?

M: He loves having other kids to play with. Only last week, they learnt how to tie their shoes. Ryan was the first one to get it finished.

W: What did the teachers at kindergarten say about him?

M: They said that he’s starting to learn how to tell time. Step by step, he’s learning the alphabet, too. They say he is very clever.

  (Text 9)

W: My guest today is Charles Duke, a famous astronaut. Charles, have you always been interested in space

  travel?

M: Frankly, as a child, it’d never entered my head. I used to wonder what space travel might be like, but I

  was never absorbed in it.

W: So when did you become interested in space travel?

M: It was at the Naval Academy.

W: Not in the Air Force?

M: No, but I was a navy pilot. I had fallen in love with planes. And that gave me the chance to start--- to

get selected for the astronaut programme.

W: And how did you find the training?

M: Well, the moon surface training in the spacesuit was physically demanding. In spacesuit you had to fight to bend your arms and move your fingers inside gloves. But actually, the most challenging part was

practicing landing and then taking off. We often spend 8 hours a day trying to learn what to do.

W: So how did you feel when you first heard that you were actually going to the moon?

  M:…

  (Text 10)

M: Good morning, everyone. This time I’ll say something about memory. Since memory plays an important role in our life, scientists are increasingly interested in research on how to improve memory.

Here are some factors they believe to be important in developing memory.

To begin with, you must take special care in your daily life. Food, for example, is very important.

Some vegetables and fruits are necessary for your memory to work properly. Another factor is water. It helps to keep the memory systems working properly, especially in old people. According to Dr. Rosewell, lack of water in the body has an immediate and strong effect on memory. It can cause confusion and other thought difficulties. Sleep also plays an important role. To be able to have a good memory, we must allow the brain to have plenty of rest. While sleeping, the brain no longer controls the senses, and starts to review and store the information one has received. Lack of sleep would make one feel tired and would weaken one’s ability to concentrate. Also, one’s ability to store information would be affected.
