Dear Henry,
How is everything going? I’m writing to tell you there will be a bike trip along the Silk Road during the summer vacation. Knowing you are interested in it, I want to invite you to join me.
We are to meet in Xi’an, the starting point of the Silk Road, on July 20. Then we’ll ride through Shaanxi Province, and finally stop in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, covering a length of approximately 660 kilometers. The journey is only part of the Silk Road, during which we can admire the splendid scenery. We need to prepare some necessities such as food, water, tents and jackets for our trip. I am expecting to enjoy the exciting trip with you.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: Excuse me. I want to buy some storybooks in easy English.
M: Well, there are a lot of storybooks upstairs in our children’s section. Maybe some of them will meet your needs.
Text 2
M: It’s time for desserts! Would you like some?
W: I’m full, but I’ve always got room for something sweet!
M: OK. I’ll get you some.
Text 3
M: How much is the blouse, please?
W: 100 dollars. But there is a special offer today. You can have 10% off the regular price.
M: Ok, I’ll take it.
Text 4
M: Good morning, Ma’ma. Can I help you?
W: Yes. I’m in Room 8715. My husband and I couldn’t get any real sleep last night. There was a construction going on all night outside. It’s just a nightmare for us!
Text 5
W: Thank goodness you’re here. These insects are driving us crazy!
M: What sort of insects are we dealing with?
W: We just bought this house and it is infected with many kinds of insects, especially wood-eating worms.
M: Don’t worry. My drug is the most effective for insects.

W: Can I have your ticket, ID card and passport, please?
M: Here you are.
W: OK. What baggage are you going to check?
M: I want to check these two.
W: The small one is OK. But the other one is over the weight limit.
M: So, what should I do?
W: You have to pay for it. We’ll charge for baggage over 20kg.
M: How much will that be then?
W: 90 yuan.
M: OK! Here it is.
W: Here is your receipt.

M: Hi, happy new year!
W: Hey, the same to you!
M: Time flies! One year has already been a history!
W: Absolutely, it’s time to say bye-bye to the last year and to say hello to the new year!
M: Yeah. Have you made any good study plans for this new year?
W: Some plans? That’s a wonderful idea, but I have no idea yet. How about you?
M: I have made a plan about learning my biochemistry.
W: Sounds good!
M: Besides, I also want to be healthier this year, so I think I should take more exercise.
W: Great!
Text 8
W: Hello. This is Doris.
M: This is Mike. I’m calling to confirm your appointment for tomorrow morning at 9 am with Dr. Parker.
W: Oh, I almost forgot. Thank you for calling to remind me. Actually, I do need to change the time of my appointment. I’ll have to meet my friend from America. So I can’t make it that early.
M: Then two o’clock would work out?
W: I think I should be able to make it at 1:15. Will that be Ok?
M: No problem. I have your appointment changed from tomorrow morning to tomorrow afternoon at 1:15.
W: Wonderful. Thanks a lot.
Text 9
M: Have you ever heard the saying, “Clothes make the man”? It might be truer than we imagine.
W: When a police officer or firefighter puts on their uniform, it probably gives them a sense of responsibility and authority.
M: Absolutely. When a judge puts on that heavy black uniform, it serves as a reminder to the judge of the responsibility of their position.
W: I know when I’m wearing a nice suit I feel a lot more confident. If I’m dressed up for a party, I feel a lot better about myself.
M: Yeah, I think everyone recognizes that part about the power of clothes....but that’s not exactly why I wear a tie to work every day.
W: You wear it because you think it makes you smarter.
M: Yes. I think putting on a shirt and tie actually affects the way my brain works.
W: That’s a very interesting concept!
M: My eyes look down and see what I’m wearing and my brain gets a reminder that I’m a businessman.... and I think the brain responds to expectations.
W: It’s kind of like an actor trying to play a role...you have to have the right clothes!
M: I think that’s a good way of expressing it!
Text 10
Hello everyone. My name is Lucy. On behalf of “Sunny Tours”, I’d like to welcome you all to Los Cabos. It’s 8:15 a.m. now. The bus ride to your hotel will take about fifteen minutes. Right now I’d like to take a minute to make you familiar with the area and discuss some brief safety instructions. Please don’t eat or drink while on the bus. But taking pictures is OK as long as you keep your hands inside the bus.
Los Cabos is a quiet, beautiful city, where you can relax sitting by the beach. Please do not swim here. There aren’t sharks of course, and the water is free from pollution, but there are strong waves. Do not feel disappointed, though. San Lucas is the next destination where you can enjoy swimming in the ocean. We’re going to be pulling up to the hotel in just a few minutes. Have a wonderful vacation in Los Cabos.
