When I was seven years old, my family created an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box, and then we waited for the live ants to arrive. Shortly after the ants were dropped into the glass box, they got to work making tunnels(地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. After hours of staring, I realized that the ants had their own jobs. With my mom’s help, I kept a diary of what happened each day and named the ants.
On the fifth day, a disaster hit the ant farm. The pages of the diary, still wrinkled where teardrops fell, show the depth of the disaster. I had put my face so close to the glass box that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants survived the earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was frightened as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm. My mother said that the ants were dying of “sadness”. They simply could not stand the reality that their tunnels had been destroyed.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more. Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be praised for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity(逆境)is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we humans cannot give up when we face disappointment. Unlike the ants, we have to realize that if a tunnel falls down, we just have to build another.
21. What happened to the ant farm on the fifth day?
A. A heavy rain hit the ant farm unexpectedly.
B. The tunnels in the glass box were destroyed.
C. The ants all died when the tunnels fell down.
D. The ant farm was rebuilt after the accident.
22. The mother built an ant farm to help the writer to ______.
A. learn to accept reality
B. explore the natural world
C. understand how to work together
D. realize the importance of hard work
23. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Adversity makes humans even stronger.
B. Humans should try hard to avoid disasters.
C. Mothers should let their kids experience failures.
D. Ants are braver than humans in face of adversity.

Most teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Getting the right amount of sleep is necessary for anyone who wants to do well in tests or sports. Unfortunately, many teens don’t get enough sleep.
Until recently, teens was often blamed for staying up late, oversleeping for school, and falling asleep in class. But recent studies show that their sleep patterns(模式)actually differ from those of adults or kids.
Scientists say that during the teen years, the body’s circadian rhythm, which is controlled by a biological(与生物学有关的)clock in the brain, is temporarily reset, telling a person to fall asleep later and wake up later. This change might arise from the fact that the brain hormone melatonin(褪黑激素)is produced later at night for teens than it is for kids and adults. This can make it harder for teens to fall asleep early.
These changes in the body’s circadian rhythm are in line with a busy time in life. For most teens, the pressure to do well in school is stronger than when they were kids, and it’s harder to get by without studying hard. And teens also have other time demands — everything from sports and other after-school activities to doing a part-time job to save money for college.
Early start times in some schools might also play a role in lost sleep. Teens who fall asleep after midnight may still have to get up early for school, meaning that they might have only 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night. A few hours of missed sleep a night may not seem like a big deal, but it can lead to sleep loss over time.
24. The right amount of sleep is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to ______.
A. show the secret of good sleep
B. attract readers’ interest in sleep patterns
C. introduce the topic about sleep loss among teens
D. discuss the relationship between sleep and performance
25. What can we learn about teens’ sleep from the text?
A. Early start times are the main reason for teens’ sleep loss.
B. Teens can get up late to make up for their lost sleep.
C. There are biological reasons for teens’ sleeping late.
D. A busy schedule has little to do with teens’ sleep patterns.
26. What is the text mainly about?
A. The suggestions on how to get enough sleep.
B. The reasons why teens don’t get enough sleep.
C. The results caused by not getting enough sleep.
D. The importance of getting enough sleep for teens.

My dear son,
Your letter of last week reached us yesterday, and I only have $13 left at present, which I will send to you with this letter. I may sell the other pig next week and make up the balance of what you wanted. I will probably have to wear the old overcoat to meetings again this winter, but that doesn’t matter as long as you are getting education.
I want you to be well educated so that you can go anywhere and spell the hardest word. I want you to be able to go among the Romans or the Medes and Persians and talk to any of them in their own native tongue. I never had any advantages when I was a boy, but your mother and I decided that we would support your learning no matter how much it may take though it means cutting down our daily living costs.
I hope you will get your education as cheap as you can, for it is a big job for your mother and me to pay the school fees. I knew education comes high but I didn’t know the clothes also cost so much. Now regarding that boat-paddling suit, and that basketball suit, and that bathing suit, and that lawn-tennis suit, I don't care about the money, because you say a young man can't really educate himself successfully and completely without them, but I wish you’d send home what you get through with this fall, and I will wear them through the winter under my other clothes. We have much colder winters here than we used to, or else I am failing in bodily health. Last winter I tried to go through without underclothes, the way I did when I was a boy, but a Manitoba wave came down our way and picked me out of a crowd.
I am not much of a pensman, so you will have to excuse this letter. We are all quite well, except your old grandpa, whose shoulders badly hurt, and hope this will find you enjoying the same great blessing.
Your father
27. The son wrote to his parents in order to ______.
A. ask his parents for money to buy some new clothes
B. show his great concern about his grandpa’s health
C. persuade his parents to wear more clothes in winter
D. tell his parents about his present performance at school
28. In Paragraph 2, the father is mainly expressing his ______.
A. pride B. worries C. amazement D. expectations
29. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A. The father suffered from a bad cold.
B. The weather changed greatly those days.
C. The villagers laughed at the father's clothes.
D. The house got damaged because of the cold weather.
30. What do we know about the father from the letter?
A. He is actually very mean with his money.
B. He is quite upset about the high school fees.
C. He is concerned about his son’s grades at school.
D. He is willing to do what he can to support his son.

It is natural for us teenagers to feel upset. 31 Here I am offering some useful suggestions.
·Move your body.
32 Have you ever noticed how you feel happier and have a sense of achievement after a good workout? That's because working out creates endorphins—body chemicals that make us feel happy. No matter how low you are feeling, your mood will get a well-deserved boost(改善)after a workout. Exercise also helps you keep your heart in shape, makes you stronger and helps you stay at a healthy weight. And exercise is totally fun—and it’s great for your self-esteem, too.
·Talk about it.
33 Friends’ ears can be a great source of support since you’re all in the same boat. And don’t forget your mom—she was once a teenager as well and may understand more than you realize. Even talking to your pet can help –just saying things out loud can help you see things differently and calm you down.
·Laugh a lot.
Humor can rescue you from an upset moment or make you feel better when you’re in an unpleasant mood. No matter what's going on, the ability to laugh at yourself and your situation is really important. 34 It’s true! Using your smile muscles tells your brain to make more endorphins and that boosts your mood.
·Cry—it's okay!
Sometimes the only way to get your feelings out is to cry -so go ahead! Shut yourself in your room and cry your eyes out! No one says you have to be happy all the time. 35
A. Why not pack up your suitcase and take a trip?
B. We can’t say enough good things about exercise.
C. But still we should find ways to manage our feelings.
D. So smile to whatever is happening and choose to be happy.
E. And did you know just smiling can help better your mood?
F. When you are done, you’ll be ready to face the world again.
G. Don’t hold in all those feelings until you are ready to explode.

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
My wife and I used to feel that it was 56 (possible) to be a true friend to someone 57 name we didn’t know. How wrong we were! A few 58 (year) of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with 59 same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking. Before the bus takes off, we all join 60 a conversation: where’s the silent woman who always sits up front and never responds to our greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn’t have much money to spare, 61 she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.
Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table next to someone 62 (sit) alone. It was the woman from the bus. We greeted her as usual, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she 63 (speak), the words escaped difficultly from her lips. All at once we realized 64 she hadn’t talked with us before. Talking was hard for her. Over dinner, she told us her story. We got along very well and became friends.
