On 24 and 25 November, the busiest days in the American sale calendar and the unofficial start of the international Christmas shopping season, thousands of activists and concerned citizens in 65 countries will take a 24-hour consumer detox(消费者排毒)as part of the 14th yearly Buy Nothing Day,a global event that started in Vancouver,Canada.

From joining zombie marches through shopping centers to organizing credit card “cutups”and shopaholic clinics,Buy Nothing Day activists aim to challenge themselves, their families and their friends to switch off from shopping and tune back into life for one day• Featured in recent years by the likes of CNN,Wired, the BBC,and CBC,the global event is celebrated as a relaxed family holiday,as a non-commercial street party, or even as a politically charged public protest.Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending.

Reasons for participating in Buy Nothing Day are as varied as the people who choose to participate. Some see it as an escape from the mark eting mind games and crazy consumer binge(狂欢)that has come to characterise the holiday season, and our culture m general.Others use it to show the environmental consequences of over-consumption•

Two recent disaster warnings outline the sudden urgency of our dilemma. First of all, in October,a global warming report by economist Sir Nicholas Stern predicted that climate change will lead to the most massive and most wide-ranging market failure the world has ever seen.Soon afterwards,a major study published in the journal Science forecasted the neartotal collapse(崩溃)of global fisheries within 40 years.

Kalie Lasn,co-founder of the Adbusters Media Foundation, who was responsible for turning Buy Nothing Day into an international yearly event, said,“Our strong fall into ecological collapse requires a complete change in the way we see things.Driving hybrid(混合动力)cars and limiting industrial emissions(排放物)is great, but they are band-aid(创可贴式的)solutions if we don’t settle the central problem--we have to consume less. This is the message of Buy Nothing Day.”

As Lasn suggests,Buy Nothing Day isn’t just about changing your habits for one day. It’s about starting a lasting lifestyle commitment to consuming less and producing less waste.

24.What do we know about Buy Nothing Day?

A.It was founded in America. B.It discourages consuming.

C.It rewards non-shopping families. D.It aims to clear shoppers from the streets.

A.Shoppers spend money like water. B.The shopping centers are in a mess.

C.People waste time on street parties. D.A protest march often takes place.

26.What is the focus of Paragraph 4?

A.The effects of Buy Nothing Day. B.Recent studies on global market.

C.The possible dangers on global market. D.Reasons for organizing Buy Nothing Day.

27.What does Lasn say about the hidden message of Buy Nothing Day?

A.Reduce carbon emission. B.Shop less for one single day.

  C.Be more active in production. D.Lead an eco—friendly lifestyle.C

Our coverage this week starts with a tragedy at a small church in a small American community. About 30 miles outside of San Antonio, Texas, is a place named Sutherland Springs.

Yesterday, during service at the First Baptist Church, police say a man entered the building and started shooting. A county sheriffsays more than 20 people were killed, numerous others were injured, though we didn’t know the exact number when we produced today’s show. At least two medical facilities were treating victims of the shooting.

There was a chase after the attack. The suspect apparently fled into a neighboring county where he also died. Officials were trying to find out if he took his own life or if he was killed by police, in addition to his motivation.

Five days after a terroristic attack in New York City, there was a sign of resilience(恢复能力)yesterday when 50,000 runners were expected to hit the road in the TCS New York City Marathon. City and state officials had promised the event would be safe, following an attack on October 31st that killed eight people in the borough of Manhattan. Two and a half million spectators were expected and of those who took on the 26-mile challenge, one said she couldn't live her live afraid that something like a terrorist attack could happen. It is unavoidable that in near future intelligent autonomous vehicles will replace aconsiderable percentage of cars that we now have on the roads.

Ford is developing a fully-autonomous vehicle without a steering wheelor gas and brake pedals;the software and sensors will do all the work;the vehicle will take you where you want to go at the push of a button, the auto industry giant announced on Thursday,Aug.17th,2017.The car maker expects the vehicle to be ready by the end of 2021 and says that's an important step toward improving road safety and transforming mobility for millions of people.

Although five years seems far off,for Ford,it's a blink of an eye. That's OK because the car-maker has been working on autonomous driving for more than 10 years -and it has a lot more to accomplish in the next five.Ford has not determined whether it will be a sedanhatchback or SUV. Moreover, Ford isn't sure whether is fully autonomous car will be powered by gasoline, hybrid or fully electric power train.

Intriguingly, those aren't the only unknowns with this project.Ford has not decided what platform the car will ride on, for the fully autonomous Ford will start off as a ride-share-only vehicle. Ford isn't sure how it will offer the ride-sharing vehicle to customers, be it through FordPass app or with anther ride-sharing platform. Clearly, there' s a lot of details to be worked out in the next half decade.

As the cost of the technology comes down,it appears that ou might be able to bis one for yourself. The tech begs the question, though:Would you even need or want to own a self-driving

No matter, though,in just five years, you'll probably be able to bail(招手)a ride in one whether you own it or not.

In fact,by the end of this year Ford will have the largest autonomous test vehicle fleet(车队).

It will have around 30self-driving Fusion Hybrid sedans on the roads in California,Arizona and Michigan.

  Children's Games in Ancient China

Unlike the children nowadays, the children during ancient times didn't have smart phone, iPad or computer to entertain themselves. 36 Let's take a look.

  Kicking stone balls

During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular sport in the northern part of China, and it was often played in the winter to keep warm. Stones were carved into small balls and kicked along with feet.

  Flying kites

Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood, instead of paper. Nowadays, the three most famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite and Weifang kite. 37 For example, the swallow-shaped kite is a well-known Beijing style.

Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the nation. Even nowadays, many children like playing it. There are two ways to play. One way is covering a child's eyes while other kids run around to tease him. 38

  39

The closest thing to watching a film or television for entertainment during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. Folk artists manipulate puppets behind the screen, narrating stories and accompanied by music.

  Setting off firecrackers

Firecrackers have a history of more than 2,000 years. It is said that there was a beast named Nian in ancient China. 40 After gunpowder was invented, it gradually replaced the bamboo joint cracker. Crackers are still set off during Spring Festival to symbolize auspiciousness.

  Monolog 10

Look at this picture. It’s the London Tea Trade centre. As you can see, it is on the North Bank of the River Thames. It is the center of an important industry in the ever yday life of the British people. Tea is the British national drink. Every man, woman and child over ten years of age, has an average over four cups a day, or some one thousand five hundred cups annually. About 30 percent of the world’s export of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world.

Now in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea-tasters before they are sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work! Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on a long table. The tasters generally taste tea with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea. After that, they

  Dear Terry,

It’s great to hear you’re invited to a Chinese friend’s home. Want to know something about Chinese customs? Firstly, make sure to arrive on time, or a bit earlier. If you’d like to bring a gift, fruit is usually a good choice. At the dinner table, it is appropriate to wait for the elderly people in the family to start eating. But if they insist that you start first, just go ahead. Sometimes the host offers guests more food than they need. In that case, it’s OK to let them know you are fine.

Well, relax and enjoy your visit.

  Best,

  Li Hua
