DTE Home Energy Consultation - DTE recently launched its free home energy consultation promotion on Oakland County Moms. It is free to residential customers and provides you with a full home energy usage analysis, as well as free energy saving light bulbs(灯泡).

I decided to schedule my own energy consultation because I am one of those customers who regularly receive letters from DTE that I’m using more energy than my neighbors. I have a majority of our light bulbs switched over to energy saving versions, but thought maybe there was something I was missing.

It was easy to schedule an appointment for a DTE Sales Representative to come to my home and do a walk-through. On the day of our appointment, Anthony from DTE came to our home. He was extremely polite and eager to help.

I explained to Anthony that we’ve been receiving letters from DTE so he immediately took a closer look at everything. He was very knowledgeable and pointed out things I didn’t even think of. Our track lighting in our family room uses Halogen lights. Halogen lights are the most expensive to operate as they use the most energy. He suggested that we unplug our cell phone chargers when not in use because it could run an additional $5 per month for each charger. Additionally, he noticed that we had fixed energy saving light bulbs downstairs that tied into a dimmer (调光器)switch. He pointed it out as you should never use energy saving light bulbs with a dimmer switch since it is a risk of fire.

Anthony made sure every fitting possible had energy saving light bulbs. He even took down light fittings from the ceiling to replace bulbs. We were left with energy saving light bulbs all throughout the house (except for the dimmer switches), and some great tips for what we could do differently. I can't wait to see the effect on future bills.

  21. The author decided to try out DTE energy consultation because she _.

  A. wanted to get free energy saving light bulbs

  B. needed to reduce energy consumption at her house

  C. hoped to experience its free home energy consultation

  D. intended to show the effectiveness of its energy consultation

  22. What causes the author to consume more energy at her house?

  A. Using Halogen lights in track lighting.

  B. Charging cell phones in the wrong chargers.

  C. Replacing energy saving light bulbs too often.

  D. Connecting energy saving light bulbs with a dimmer switch.

  23. Which of the following best describes Anthony in the author’s eyes?

  A. Smart and creative. B. Easygoing and careful.

  C. Polite and generous. D. Considerate and professional.

  24. The author wrote this passage to _.

  A. call on people to save energy

  B. promote free home energy consultation

  C. show that every family can cut down energy usage

  D. share her experience of having free home energy consultation

  B

There are some house plants that can cause severe poisoning in pets and so, you need to be very careful while choosing which plants to decorate your house with. That could be a lot of risk just to improve the beauty of your house. Holiday cactus (仙人掌)is a popular house decoration, especially during the holidays, and has been often classified as a safe-but-better-avoid flowering plant.

You can plant holiday cactus in your garden or keep them at home, but you need to be aware of a few details. Dogs that have consumed this cactus have been reported to show signs of poisoning, such as dullness and loss of appetite. But, on the other hand, there are many people who say that their pets have often taken leaves or flowers of this cactus. The pets are still alive and their health is just fine. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has declared the holiday cactus to be non-poisonous to pet animals. So, it is not harmful to your pets.

Ideally, your children should not be eating any sort of plants that are not recommended for a human diet. Although holiday cactus has been regarded as safe for consumption by pets, would you eat your garden plants? The same theory applies to your children. They should not be eating this cactus or any other plants, as chemicals in the plant could lead to an upset stomach and may be a cause of allergy. As a preventive measure, keep all house plants away from the reach of kids who are likely to eat them.

Holiday cactus is not poisonous to pets and children. They are absolutely safe and you can plant them in your house without worrying about its ill effects on the health of your family members, including your pets. But you may be adding fertilizers and other chemicals to keep this house plant healthy and blooming. These are not what your kids and pets should be consuming at all. In small quantities, holiday cactus is not really poisonous.

However, when eaten in large amount, it can prove to be really deadly to their health.

  25. Holiday cactus is a safe-but-better-avoid house plant probably because it _.

  A. will be destroyed by pets

  B. causes severe poisoning in pets

  C. may have potential risk of unpleasant results

  D. leads to signs of poisoning among young kids

  26. According to the author, what should people be aware of when keeping holiday cactus?

  A. Never let your kids eat it.

  B. Keep it out of the reach of pets.

  C. Try not to use any chemicals on it.

  D. Remember to plant it in the garden.

  27. Holiday cactus can be harmful to health when _.

  A. kids touch it B. chemicals are added to it

  C. pets take a small bite of it D. it is eaten mixed with other food

Two new studies have investigated why fewer females study and work in the so-called STEM subjects in the United States. Those subjects are science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) examined existing research. Its report “Why So Few?” suggested ways to interest more girls and women in the STEM fields. The researchers found that cultural and environmental factors make a difference. Researcher Christianne Corbett says more boys than girls score very high on math tests in most countries, but Iceland and Thailand are exceptions. “In those countries, more girls than boys actually scored above ninety in math. Further evidence shows that cultural factors and social factors can make a difference in who achieves at the very high levels and if girls are achieving or not.”

The other study was carried out by the Bayer Corporation in the United States. It asked more than one thousand women about their experiences. Seventy-seven percent said not enough women are working in STEM professions today. This is because they were not identified or urged to study those subjects in school. Rebecca Lucore,Bayer USA Executive Director, says its study produced results similar to the AAUW research. “Our recent survey showed there’s still a lot of work to be done. They say their interest in science begins before the age of eleven. So we need programs that really get in front of kids while they're young in primary school.”

Why is it so important for girls and women to be involved in science? Christianne Corbett has one answer. “Increasing diversity in professions leads to better products and science. Expanding and developing this science and engineering workforce is critical to the nation’s economic creativity, productivity and competitiveness.”

Rebecca Lucore says scientific professions need more and better workers. “It’s just about having scientifically literate(有科学素养)citizens. It’s really important no matter what career you go into, you can think critically and creatively, you can work in teams, you can adapt to change and that’s important for everybody.”

  28. It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that _.

  A. girls achieve better in maths in Iceland

  B. boys score higher than girls on all tests

  C. girls are more talented in maths in Thailand

  D. boys are more interested in STEM subjects

  29. Fewer females are involved in science because _.

  A. they make less effort than boys

  B. they have no access to STEM profession

  C. they are affected by cultural and social factors

  D. they are encouraged to learn other subjects at early ages

  30. Christianne Corbett and Rebecca Lucore agree that _.

  A. women are not expected to learn Stem subjects

  B. Stem subjects help the development of a nation

  C. creative thinking is the most important to a nation

  D. diversity in professions reduces the desire to learn science

When you graduate from high school, you have a variety of options available to you. 31 You may decide to join the military or you may plan on taking a year off to decide what to do with your life. Here are some financial tips that should help you no matter what your situation.

The first thing you need to do to is to set up a budget. If you are planning on going to college, you should include your school expenses and create a college budget. If you are planning on working, you need to estimate how much it is going to be to move out and how much you need to have saved up for a deposit on an apartment. 32

It is important to put your spending in order of importance. Make short-term goals like saving up for the deposit on your first apartment or to save up for the down payment on a car,and be sure you are setting money aside for that. Take into consideration upcoming school expenses and be sure that you are saving enough to cover those. 33

34 Making on-time payments for a car loan or your apartment can help you do this. One option is to build your credit using a credit card, but if you just run up a balance you may end up hurting yourself in the long run. Part of establishing good credit is making sure that you do not make any mistakes with your credit. Be sure to pay off your credit card balance in foil each month.

Taking the time to balance your checkbook each week can help you save money in overdraft fees. 35 You cannot trust the balance at the ATM because it does not reflect all of the money that you have spent. Using an app that handles both budgeting and balancing your account can make it much easier to balance your account.

  A. Work on Establishing Your Credit.

  B. A budget is not enough to move you toward your financial goals.

C You will also need to budget for things like clothes, food, and fun.

  D. It will also help you avoid a mess that can be difficult to deal with.

  E. Your allowance and scholarship do not cover all of your college expenses.

  F. This can include things like buying a new car, purchasing a home or getting married.

  G. You may be planning on going on to college in the fall or you may be working full-time.

  The cost of a smile

Kathy was a young woman in her 20’s who worked in a small restaurant as a waitress. One day,as she went about her shift with her usual angry look,a kind old man walked in and sat down at the counter. He read the menu and politely told her what he wanted.

Kathy took his order and yelled, “Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said, “A smile costs nothing”. Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.

She brought his order, cleared his plates, and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.

Each time the old man saw her, he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.

A week went by,and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say,“A smile costs nothing.”

But a week later,Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “1 SMILE......$20" at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.

He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, “•••and a smile,if you don’t mind”. Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud, “Now, now…” The man jokingly scolded. “I ordered a smile, not a

laugh”. So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, “Coming right up, sir.” And to her surprise, he left $20 tip!

A few years went by, and the two bonded like family. Charlie, the kind old man,was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago. He spent most of his time at home, with the exception of his frequent restaurant visits. Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him.
