Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered, “Was she still angry with me?,,Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I,ve been looking for you,,’ she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum,I,m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.

Text 1

W: Last weekend was the Cherry Blossom Festival. They had music and dancing. It was so crowded, though, that I got lost. I had to call my brother so he could find me.

M: Sorry I missed it.

Text 2

W: I,m having trouble hearing my music on my iPod through these earphones. I think they’re broken.

M: Here, give them to me so I can listen. Oh, yes. You need to get a new pair.

Text 3

W: What time shall we leave for London tomorrow?

M: I don’t know. Let’s go to the ticket office and check the times.

W: Oh, no! All the tickets are sold out. What should we do?

M: Let’s get the bus.

Text 4

W: My jewelry store needs a new website. The one I have now is so out of date. I bet I'm losing customers because of that.

M: I have been designing websites for three years. Just give me a week, and Fll create an amazing site that will impress both you and your customers.

Text 5

M: I want to see about getting a private room as soon as possible. Also, please put a "No Visitors” sign on my door when you leave.
W: I’ll take care of both things, but first, I have to give you an examination so that I can fill out your, chart.

Text 6

W: Excuse me, but do you have the shirt in blue (6)?

M: Yes, we do. But only in small, large, and extra-large.

W: Oh, dam. I was hoping to have it in a medium size (6).It would really go well with my bag.

M: Well, we may be getting more in next week. Would you like me to check our

computer?

W: Oh, yes, please.

M: OK. Yes,it looks like our manager has ordered more (7).We should have some in medium by next Thursday.

W: Great! P1I ask my assistant to come back then and pick one up (7).

Text 7

W: What are the main differences between this country and your country?

M: Well,in Russia, everything happens very fast. People talk quickly (9),they drive their cars too fast, the good deals go by really quickly…but here in Canada (8), it seems like people are a little more relaxed.

W: Is that true for everything?

M: No, of course not. In Russia, going to the bank can take hours. The same is true for the post office and the supermarket. In Canada, however, these places are pretty easy to get through quickly.

W: So, what is it that makes some things go either faster or slower compared to us here in Canada? I was born and raised here, so I guess I don’t notice these things. I've also never been outside the country before (10).

M: I think the people in Russia are fast movers by nature, at least in the big cities. Public places are still very slow because they haven’t tried to do business any differently than they used to.

W: But in Canada, it’s the opposite?

M: Right. The government here does a great job of solving problems and using new technology to make businesses work better (9). But I think Canadians are just more calm in general than Russians are... and they're definitely more relaxed than Americans!

W: Well, I agree with you about that last part!

Text 8

W: How was your economics class?

M: Well, to be honest with you, I fell asleep during the lecture.

W: Was it that boring?

M: No, it wasn’t the teacher’s fault The problem is that I can’t stay awake for a two-hour lecture. I have been working in the evening at the hospital (11).

W: Isn’t that going to affect your grades?

M: Probably. But I need to work to pay my school fees (12).

W: Maybe you should talk to the financial aid office. There’s no point in working so hard to make money if you are just going to fail your classes.

M: But they are going to try to offer me a bunch of loans. I am trying to avoid going into debt. That’s why I've been working!

W: OK, then I have a better idea. Why don’t you go to the student employment office and see if they can help you find another job (13)? Even if you have to work, there’s no reason why you should work at night.

M: That’s a great idea, I actually have a break before my next class,so I,ll go there now (13).

M: Thank you so much for agreeing to meet up with me!

W: No problem! I bet this whole thing is pretty stressful

M: Yeah! My parents are asking me all these stupid questions!

W: Don’t worry. You’ll be free soon enough!

M: Cool! So, how did you know what classes to take in the beginning?

W: Well, I had no idea what I wanted to study when I first got here. I just kind of picked classes that sounded interesting (15). You can also choose classes based on when they are held so that your schedule flows nicely.

M: What do you mean?

W: Well, I'm taking four classes right now, but I only go to school three days a week, so I have four full days off.

M: Are your classes hard?

W: Well, there is a lot of information that you are responsible for, and you are expected to work independently (16). You also have to write a lot of papers for certain classes and participate in class discussions in others—each class is different. The trick is to figure out how to prepare for different kinds of courses (16).

M: What about, uh, social life?

W: I was waiting for that question! I’ll tell you what. I’m gonna call up some of my friends, and we can all go out to lunch and talk about it. How does that sound?

M: Awesome!
