In an unmanned supermarket, a customer waits to pay. With the use of advanced digital (数字的,电子的) payment technology, including biological recognition and in-depth learning, the man leaves in a minute. There’s no cashier (收银员) in the store. At a large university, students use a hand-scanning machine that authorizes their entry into the gym. Those people are using “smart machines” which identify people by their physical characteristics. These new devices use fingers, hands, faces, eyes and voices. Some machines may even use smells. This new technology, called biometrics (生物识别技术), gets information from parts of the body.

In the past, biometric machines were used mainly in government agencies or in prisons. But now that the cost of the technology is lower, these machines are starting to be used everywhere, from border services to schools.

Some people, however, are concerned that these machines will mean the destruction of personal privacy. They worry that the machines will get personal information about them. “I know it seems like these machines are invading our privacy, but actually, biometric machines help to protect it,” says Jay Tarkett, who works at a company that develops the machines. “They can be used instead of passwords on a computer, for example. They can also identify criminals at airports. So, really, they help to promote public safety, and all the information stored is kept confidential by the machine itself.”

It has been found that the hand scan works well in the college gym. Before this machine was used, students at the college entered the gym using cards similar to credit cards. The problem was that students often lost or forgot their cards. With the hand-scanning machine, however, the problem was solved right away.

But the machines are still new, and there can be problems. For example, voice recognition works on the phone, but it is not precise, and can be tricked. Another constraint(限制)wenotice, with machines that use face recognition in particular, is that they can be fooled if people color their hair or gain a lot of weight. However, this particular problem may be solved by a new type of technology that scans a person’s iris, the colored part of the eye. It can even identify the person from a few feet away, recognizing a customer as he or she approaches the ATM.

  59. What’s the author’s intention by presenting two examples in Paragraph 1?

  A. To bring in the topic of the passage.

  B. To stress how smart machines work.

  C. To show the popularity of smart machines.

  D. To introduce the convenience smart machines offer.

  60. What is the author’s attitude towards the new technology?

  A. Bitter. B. Worried. C. Satisfied. D. Optimistic.

  61. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. An introduction to biometric machines.

  B. An advertisement for biometric machines.

  C. A brief description of hand scanning machines.

  D. An analysis of biometric machines’ value in economy.

In 1921 Charles William Paddock was regarded as the “fastest human being” in the world. In the 1920 Olympic Games in Belgium Paddock won the gold medal in the 100-meter dash and a silver medal in the 200-meter dash.

One day Paddock visited a school in Cleveland, Ohio and spoke to the students. A young black child listened carefully as this famous athlete talked. “What do you want to be?” Paddock asked. “You name it and then you will become just that,” he said. That young man decided that he too wanted to be the fastest human being on earth.

He shared his dream with Charles Riley, his junior high track coach. Coach Riley said to him, “It's great to have a dream, son, but to achieve your goal, it is necessary to build a ladder (梯子) to it. On the ladder you must have steps that will support the weight of all you hope to achieve. The first step on your dream ladder must be determination and the second dedication. The third step is discipline! The fourth is attitude!”

However, the possibilities were against this young man. He was a poor black man who received no scholarship to college. When traveling with his team he slept and ate in “black only” hotels and restaurants. He won eight individual NCAA championships at Ohio State University but he was not allowed to live on the college campus.

In spite of cruel racial prejudice (种族歧视) and many other difficulties, he kept on working hard. In 1936 at the Berlin Olympics he won four gold medals. He made such an impression on Germany that even Adolph Hitler rose and waved his hand at this great runner. He was chosen for the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1970; he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 by Gerald Ford and the Congressional Gold Medal by George H. W. Bush on March 28, 1990. In 1984 a street in Berlin was renamed for him. Two U.S. postage stamps have been issued in his honor. His name? Jesse Owens.

  62. When did the boy decide to become the fastest human being?

  A. Before Paddock came to visit his school.

  B. When he was watching Paddocks running in the Olympics.

  C. While he was listening to Paddock’s speech at his school.

  D. After he talked to Charles Riley, his junior high track coach.

  63. When the boy shared his dream with his coach, the coach .

  A. didn't think much of it

  B. offered him some useful advice

  C. considered it impossible for him to realize it

  D. listed some difficulties that he might meet with

  64. To the boy, the greatest difficulty in achieving his dream might be that .

  A. he was looked down upon as a black B. he couldn't get support from his coach

  C. he couldn't afford the training D. he didn't have a strong ladder

  65. What can we learn about Jesse Owens from the passage?

  A. Gerald Ford gave him freedom in the year of 1976.

  B. Two German postage stamps have been issued in honor of him.

  C. The name of a street in Berlin was changed to honor him.

  D. Adolph Hitler awarded him a gold medal at the Berlin Olympics.

  D

  Dear Seth,

You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell you in this letter. But I've been thinking a lot about the life that you have ahead of you, about my life so far as I reflect on what I've learned, and about my role as a dad in trying to prepare you for the trials that you will face in the coming years.

You are young, and life has not yet to show a cold face to you, to throw disappointments and loneliness and pain into your path. You have not been worn down yet by long hours of thankless work. by the slings and arrows of everyday life. For this, be thankful. You are at a wonderful time of life. You have many wonderful stages of life still to come, but they are not without their costs and risks.

I hope to help you along your path by sharing some of the best of what I’ve learned. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt. What works for me might not work for you.

  Life can be cruel

There will be people in your life who won't be very nice. They’ll tease (取笑) you because you’re different, or for no good reason. They might try to bully (欺负) you or hurt you. There’s not much you can do about these people except to learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you, who actually care about you, who make you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this, hold on to them, treasure them, spend time with them, be kind to them, love them

There will be times when you are met with disappointment instead of success. Life won’t always turn out the way you want. This is just another things you’ll have to learn to deal with. But instead of letting these things get you down, push on. Accept disappointment and learn to persevere, to pursue your dreams despite pitfalls. Learn to turn negatives into positives, and you’ll do much better in life.

You will also face heartbreak and abandonment (抛弃) by those you love. I hope you don’t have to face this too much, but happens. Again, not much you can do but to heal, and to move on with your life. Let these pains become stepping stones to better things in life, and learn to use them to make you stronger.

  Life isn’t a competition

You will meet many people who will try to do better than you, in school, in college, at work. They’ll try to have nicer cars, bigger houses, nicer clothes, cooler gadgets. To them, life is a competition --- they have to do better than their peers to be happy.

Here’s a secret: Life isn’t a competition. If you spend that journey always trying to impress others, to outdo others, you’re wasting your journey. Instead, learn to enjoy the journey. Make it a journey of Happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.

Don't worry about having a nicer car or house or anything material, or even a better-paying job. None of that matters a whit, and none of it will make you happier. You'll acquire these things and then only want more. Instead, learn to be satisfied with having enough-and then use the time you would have wasted trying to earn money to buy those things … use that time doing things you love.

Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are starting out on a weird, scary, daunting, but ultimately incredibly wonderful journey, and I will be there for you when I can. Godspeed.

  Love,

  Your Dad

  67. What does the underlined phrase “with a grain of salt” mean?

  A. eating something together with some salt B. believing something firmly

  C. taking it for granted D. not accepting something firmly

  68. According to the letter, which one isn’t the example to prove the cruelty of life?

  A. Your classmate tease, bully or hurt you.

  B. You are too busy to spend time with your parents.

  C. Your best friend betrays you by giving away your work.

  D. You fail in the mid-term exam despite your hard work.

Nobody likes being stuck in a traffic jam (交通堵塞), but it is unavoidable in our lives. So I want to tell you what fun things you can do to make use of the “wasted time” in a traffic jam.

Thanks to a busy day at work, you might miss answering some calls. This is a good time to call them back. But make sure that you use your hands –free phone to make those calls, so that you can keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel (方向盘) at all times.

You can also turn on the radio and keep yourself relaxed by listening to music. If you have a good playlist in your phone, play it, sit back, relax, and enjoy your time while your are waiting for the traffic to be cleared.

Because of full schedule every day, you might hardly find time for listening to the world news, or even reading. If you always carry a book along, then a traffic jam is the best time to read a few pages. Although studies say that eating while driving can be more dangerous than texting, many people think a traffic jam is the best time to satisfying their hunger.

This is also a good time to make a note of all the things that you have to finish by the end of the day, or may be the week, or focus on the things that you forgot to do.

Haven’t you found the time to clean up the mess in your car? Well, being stuck in a traffic jam with nothing to do can be the best time to solve this problem. Gather all the garbage, and put it aside so that you can throw it out later. And if you get a chance, get out of the car and clean it from outside too.

In this Internet age, you can check Facebook or Twitter during a traffic jam, and you can even watch videos online.

However, make sure that you concentrate while driving your car, as it can be really dangerous. The most important thing and the key to surviving a traffic jam is to be patient!

So now you see, traffic jams are not that bad after all! All you need to know is how you can make use of that time, and spend time with yourself.

In recent years, studying abroad has become popular among high school students in our country. Tens of thousands of Chinese students have gone to foreign countries to study. Many others are trying their best to apply to study abroad.

Some people are in favour of this trend. In the first place, those studying abroad can learn a foreign language quickly in a good language environment. Second, they can learn much more advanced knowledge of science and technology from foreign countries. Besides, they can meet people from different countries and experience different cultures, which may help broaden their views/horizons.

However, some people have opposite opinions. Most of the students are too young to live alone without any living experience. In addition, living far away from their home country, they may feel lonely and homesick. Of course, the studying and living expenses are much higher than those at home.

In my opinion, studying abroad is a wise choice in spite of the unavoidable disadvantages. At the same time, the financial situation of the family should not be ignored.
