One evening, the Woodlands High School Highlander team was threatening to win its first game of the season. Instead, they gave the game away.

On the previous play, after the Highlanders had driven the ball deep into the Falcons’ territory, quarterback (橄榄球的四分卫) Gentry had connected with then-15-year-old receiver Brauweiler at the three-yard line. As Brauweiler turned upfield, a Falcon defender delivered a violent hit, knocking them both to the ground at the one-yard line.

“There was a huge force, as if a truck had hit me, ”said Brauweiler, who suffered from the collision. But it was the Falcons’ player who got the worst of it. He lay still on the ground. Five minutes later, he was still down. Game officials told Highlanders coach that the teen had lost all feeling on his left side and an ambulance had been called.

The doctors arrived, and soon after, a call to a medical transport helicopter was made. That’s when the Falcons’ coach walked across the field and told Colschen that his players were too upset to finish the game and they would quit. Colschen wouldn’t have it. His team would. “It was the right thing to do, ”said Colschen. “In life, the well-being of others is what’s important, not the scoreboard.” He gathered his Highlanders and told them it was time to support their sorrowful opponents.

After the injured player was airlifted to a hospital, the two teams took the field again. With the end zone and the Highlanders’ first victory close, the team’s center caught the ball, the quarterback and his teammates took a knee, and the game clock hit zero. Game over. A tie.

The injured player is out of the hospital and recovering, which is a relief to the Highlanders, who have never regretted their decision. “It was amazing, ”said Colschen. “I was surprised and encouraged that they were thinking not about themselves but about others.”

The Human Library, which originated in Denmark, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “I’m an open book. ”

Why do you go to the library? For books, yes—but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else’s life. At one type of library, you can do just that—even though there’s not a single book.

At a Human Library, instead of books, you can “borrow” people. People with unique life stories volunteer to be the “books.” For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating as any you can find in a book. You can speak with a refugee, a soldier suffering from PTSD, a homeless person, or a woman living with HIV. The Human Library encourages people to challenge their own prejudiced ideas—to truly get to know, and learn from, someone they might otherwise make a snap judgment about. According to its website, The Human Library is “a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.”

The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000. Ronni Abergel, his brother Dany, and some colleagues hosted a four-day event during a major Northern European festival, hoping to raise awareness about violence among youth. After the success of this event, Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, which has been growing ever since.

Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren’t places at all, but events. Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don’t need a library card--anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe, in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio.

  28. What is TRUE about a human library?

  31. What would be the best title for this passage?

My kids have gone mad for the plastic spinning disc called a fidget spinner (指尖陀螺) and I have to admit, I’ve become a little addicted too. But why?

Fidget spinners have taken the world by storm. They were originally designed to help kids with conditions like autism(自闭症), deal with stress, but they have become a popular toy and they’re helping reduce my stress levels too-—when there’s something on my mind, I just spin!

There are many different designs and colors to collect and then there’s the challenge of spinning them, getting the speed up, and balancing it on the end of your finger. Adults are increasingly turning to these toys because, with all the bad news in the world, it is a good time to be selling something that allows an individual to remove some stress—

particularly at a time when smoking is looked down on.

For most school children, they’ve become the latest ‘must-have’, although some schools have banned them, saying some are poorly made and can be a distraction for pupils. However, one teacher, Ms. Timmons, says that they can aid learning among some children. She says, “These fidget toys are one way of allowing them to play without the interrupt of the tapping pencils or the tapping of feet. It’s a much less destructive way to channel their energies into something else while the teaching is going on. ”

Fidget spinners join a long and distinguished list of other childhood favourites now living in the teacher’s top drawer. It wasn’t long ago when our homes and school playgrounds were littered with loom bands (橡皮筋手环) as they suddenly became a must-have. Billions of them were sold. One teacher, Guy Tarrant, has confiscated (没收) numerous items from children over the years. He says: “There’s so much stuff, so many fashions and stages. I worked as a supply teacher in over 150 schools so I’ve probably seen it all. ”

It’s probably fair to say fidget spinners won’t always be flavour of the month. Eventually they’ll be replaced by a new equally addictive and annoying craze.

  32. What’s the purpose of inventing the fidget spinners at first?

  A. To deal with stress of adults.

  B. To cure children’s heart disease.

  C. To design a popular toy.

  D. To help kids with conditions like autism.

  33. Adults are addicted to fidget spinners because .

  A. these toys can cure diseases like autism

  B. smoking is looked down on

  C. they want to get rid of stress

  D. the spinners have become the latest ‘must-have’

  34. Why have some schools banned fidget spinners?

  A. Because they are very popular.

  B. Because they are well made.

  C. Because they can be a distraction for pupils.

  D. Because they will greatly disturb the teaching.

  35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

  A. People will go mad for other new toys in the future.

  B. The fidget spinners will always be popular.

  C. People have invented many new toys.

  D. The fidget spinners are out of date.
